We launched a free online British Sign Language level one course in March this year, developed thanks to lottery funding, and more than 13,000 people have joined the programme to learn this vital skill.
Alexis Johnson, our executive principal, said: “We were thrilled by the amount of people joining us and learning British Sign Language (BSL) via our free online level one course.
“The next step for us is to work with businesses and organisations in our town to help them to encourage their employees to learn to sign. This is not only a great communication skill to have but will enable these businesses to help and support members of the Deaf community who may need to use their services.
"Our Super 10 are now in place and we’ll be working with these organisations over the next few months to see how many of their team members we can get involved. Together we can make Doncaster a proud signing town.”
The ten organisations pledging to get their teams signing are:
- Business Doncaster
- CAST
- Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust
- Club Doncaster
- Doncaster Sheffield Airport
- Ellgia Waste Management and Recycling Limited
- Hilton Garden Inn
- Lakeside Village Shopping Outlet
- Orb Recruitment
- Venatu Recruitment
Added Alexis: “We are looking forward to sharing videos and updates from our Super 10 as they learn the basics.
“The course is available for anyone to take part in and it is simple to sign up. You can run through the course at your own pace, doing a little each day and practicing as often as you can.”
The free course delivers level one BSL content. If participants want to take and exam at the end they can do this via a third party and there is a cost associated with the exam.
